Ralph Towner – Time Line

Of these albums, I particularly enjoyed In Person By Bobby Timmons, mostly due to Timmons’ Piano playing, which is technically brilliant, perhaps his name is not as well known as other pianists in jazz because no real individual character comes through that sets him apart from others in the emotional minds of the listeners.

I also enjoyed the mix of jazz and African music on Ode To Life by Don Pullen, which provides obvious links from more modern jazz music to its origins in Africa.

The Great Pretender by Lester Bowie is a great jazz trumpet album and is worth mentioning because it does a great job of portraying Bowie’s famously fun and care free character, and proves that jazz music doesn’t always have to be as serious as some people see it.

Always Let Me Go is also an impressive live album because of the interaction between all three of the musicians, and because or Jack DeJohnette’s amazing ability to tie bands together into a group working as one. It’s also worth mentioning that Jarrett’s annoying grunts are kept to a minimum and are less audible than on some of his other recordings.
