The album count from The Penguin Jazz Guide is now at 282 (A fat lady with a 2 little duck entourage), 719 to go (I thought of a similar number comment for 719 but it was too long and complex, something to do with 'on it's own, number one' and that 789/seven ate nine joke).
The front cover of the book is getting a little bit fluffy on the side where I've opened it in the same place a lot and a couple of the contents pages are loose but it's still going strong.
Here's the list of albums I've listened to since Update #4.

Cecil Taylor’s live album Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come is an insane energetic performance which I enjoyed because I am currently reading a book about free jazz. I bought the book so that I could further understand how free jazz worked in the hope of enjoying it more. Considering that two of the subjects of individual chapters in the book happen to be two of the musicians who I’m mentioning in this post suggests to me that the book is working. Cecil Taylor is one of these musicians and the other is Ornette Coleman. The Complete Science Fiction Sessions is another free jazz album by Ornette Coleman, but the addition of vocalists and a more rigid tempo at times makes this album easier to comprehend. This probably makes this album one to listen to for anyone interested in free jazz who doesn’t know where to start. After listening to the Complete Sessions I think I should also probably listen to the original album to see what made the final cut and what was left out.
Mountainscapes is an album that could easily be classed as ambient music. It reminds me of some of the sleep music my girlfriend sometimes listens to at night to sleep on a mobile phone app, but it had the ability to keep me interested and conscious throughout. I’m not sure if it’s because I knew that the title was Mountainscapes, but this music did bring images of foggy, desolate mountains to my mind.
I included Quartet West in this post because it amazes me that Charlie Haden can be so versatile as to play on a beautifully quiet album like Beyond The Missouri Sky with Pat Metheny (as mentioned in my April 2019 Five New Favourites) or in a free jazz band like that of Ornette Coleman’s (Haden is the bass player on the above mentioned The Complete Science Fiction Sessions as well as many other Coleman albums) and also play on an album such as this, which is swinging straight ahead quartet jazz. Is there anything Charlie Haden can’t do? If he didn’t die in 2014 I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the next Ariana Grande album.
Songs From The Analog Playground by Charlie Hunter sounds as modern today as it was eighteen years ago when it was released. It’s got a great blend of hip-hop and jazz with an underlying New Orleans funk element to it. It didn’t surprise me at all when I read that Hunter was in the Band Garage A Trois with New Orleans drumming icon Stanton Moore. Hunter plays 8 string guitar on this album, providing both melody chords as on a normal guitar, as well as the bass line too. I read somewhere that someone had compared Hunter’s guitar playing to a Hammond organ sound and I’d have to agree. Mos Def also appears on two tracks on the album and Norah Jones on another two.
